After a month of use, my review of the Mario Badescu ‘Brightening Kit’ and the Buffering Lotion!
Mario Badescu is a US-based skincare brand and a favourite amongst celebrities and famous faces. Having gone through a very bad patch with my skin, I decided it was time to have a skincare overhaul and give their products a try. As well as sensitivity, my main issues are:
After spending a lot of time researching the best products to use for my problems, I settled on the Brightening Kit (£32.95) – which includes the Glycolic Foaming Cleanser, Alpha Grapefruit Cleansing Lotion, Vitamin C Serum, Whitening Mask and a sample of the Glycolic Skin Renewal Complex. The kit contains mini versions of the products so it’s a great way to sample everything and decide what you want to repurchase. I also picked up the Buffering Lotion (£15.50) which is an acne solution for cystic/under the skin acne. I purchased all of these from Beauty Bay and was surprised at how affordable most of the products in the range are.
Glycolic Foaming Cleanser
I will start with what has been my absolute favourite product in the Brightening Kit – the Glycolic Foaming Cleanser. As well as glycolic acid (a key ingredient for skin renewal and exfoliation), the cleanser also contains Chamomile, Yarrow, Sage and St. John’s Wort. Together, these ingredients help to deeply cleanse the skin and remove dead skin cells. It’s recommended you only use this up to 3 times a week but I have reduced it to 2 in recent times as it can be quite harsh on the skin. Usually the day after using the cleanser, I find my dark marks and hyperpigmentation literally peeling off and it has been amazing for texture. My skin feels soft and smooth and the small bumps I used to have on my forehead have disappeared.
I’ve found this cleanser to be most effective when used with a cleansing sponge. I use a bamboo charcoal Konjac sponge and work the cleanser into my skin with circular motions, focussing on my problem areas (cheeks and forehead).
I can no longer live without this cleanser and will definitely be repurchasing!
Alpha Grapefruit Cleansing Lotion
This is my second favourite product in the Brightening Kit and, as you can see in the pictures, I’m almost all out! This toner contains Aloe Vera, Lemon and Grapefruit Extracts – all ingredients which are essential for brightening dull unhappy skin. I use it twice a day after cleansing and have seen a remarkable difference in my skin. It leaves your face feeling squeaky clean and fresh and my skin has become softer and more ‘glowy’ over the month I’ve been using it.
Vitamin C Serum
On the days I’ve used the Glycolic Foaming Cleanser, I finish off with this Vitamin C Serum in the evening after toning. Vitamin C has antioxidant properties which protects the skin from premature aging. It also contributes to collagen production, promoting plump youthful skin.
I’m a big fan of this serum and, although the full size is quite pricey, I do see myself repurchasing it. It’s incredibly light and easily absorbed into the skin. It also works to balance out the harshness of the glycolic acid in the cleanser. The morning after using this serum, I’m always amazed at how soft my skin feels.
Now, like me, you may have done a double-take at the name of this mask (“Whitening?! Huh?”) but it’s a bit of a misnomer. This mask does not whiten your skin. What it does do is help to fade acne scarring and hyperpigmentation. The Whitening Mask contains Kojic Acid, Liquorice and Mulberry Extracts – ingredients I haven’t come across before in skincare – and they make a fantastic blend for evening skin tone.
Even immediately after using the mask, my complexion feels brighter and more even overall. I have been using the mask 3-4 times a week and keep it on for about 20 minutes (slightly longer than the advised time!) and have been really happy with the results. Typically, the scarring I get from acne fades very slowly but this mask has definitely sped up the process.
It also smells amazing. The masks makes for a great way to wind down at the end of the day.
Glycolic Skin Renewal Complex
As this was just a little extra that came with the kit, I have only used it two or three times and so I can’t say it’s made too much of a difference. It is aimed at people with dry skin, however, so if that’s something you struggle with, definitely check it out.
I recently developed cystic acne (reasons for which I will explain in a later blogpost) and I read a lot about the efficacy of this solution.
Unfortunately, however, I have been quite disappointed with this. It didn’t do much for my deep under the skin spots, though a few did become noticeably smaller. I found that it actually irritated my skin a lot more than it improved it. I think this is due to the fact that it contains Isopropyl Alcohol which can actually be an irritant for the skin, especially if your skin is sensitive.
It’s also quite difficult to use and apply as it’s a runny liquid, so applying to individual spots can be tricky. I have since found other solutions for cystic acne, which I’ll go into in an updated skincare post.
Overall, I am incredibly impressed with the Mario Badescu products I tried and shall be incorporating my favourites into my long-term skin regimen. There is a really helpful Skin Analysis feature on the Mario Badescu website too which helps to match you with the right products for you. Be sure to check it out
