Review: Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer
AKA, The Best Concealer E V E R
I had been eyeing up the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer for a long time; I had heard wonderful reviews and also wanted to make my first purchase from the Kevyn Aucoin brand. Further encouraged by rave reviews from Jameela of The Pink Matter podcast, I put it on my Christmas list and Santa came through!
The Sensual Skin Enhancer (SSE) retails at £38 and comes in a seemingly tiny 18g pot – slightly eye-watering for a concealer. However, after what has now been over a month of use, I can confidently say it is worth it.
First, the claims. This concealer is said to:
- “smooth, conceal and highlight the skin for a flawless complexion”
- “hydrate and mimic the appearance of healthy, radiant skin”
- “create a soft, dewy finish and can be used as a foundation, concealer and highlighter”
All of the above is absolutely correct and more. When I first tried this product, my jaw quite literally dropped. I placed it under my eyes, started to blend and was completely blown away by the coverage. It was in this moment that I discovered that a little really does go a long way. Through more use, I have seen that I only need the tiniest dot to get super full coverage under both eyes, on my chin AND along the bridge of my nose. The pot seems tiny but I now know I will not need to repurchase this for at least a year.
As for complexion, the SSE truly does enhance the skin. My under eye looks completely flawless when I use this. It doesn’t crease as much as my second favourite concealer (NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer) but as someone with lots of undereye lines, creasing is inevitable. When set with a loose translucent powder, the finish is gorgeous.
Tip: Apply Benefit’s Pore-fessional primer first for a completely poreless finish.
Some concealers blend best when left to sit for a little while, but this product blends incredibly well immediately. I apply the concealer with my Real Techniques Deluxe Concealer brush and then blend it out with a slightly damp sponge. It almost appears to melt into the skin, quashing any fears of cakiness. I will definitely be picking up a pot in my skin shade soon to use to spot conceal for those days when I don’t fancy doing a full face.
The longevity of the SSE is also impressive. I have had 8hr days where the wear remains flawless and in some cases, even looks better as the day goes on. Though it claims to be dewy, the concealer does dry down and when set with powder it stays set so oily folks, don’t fear.
Bonus points for the great shade range, luxe packaging and the smell too! For reference, I use the colour SX11 (which is close to Caramel in NARS’ concealer range) – a beautifully radiant, golden-toned shade.
